NEWSWATCH
Nigeria's weekly newsmagazine OUR PROFILE Ownership: Newswatch magazine is a privately owned Nigerian weekly magazine published by Newswatch Communications Limited (NCL), a company set up by four celebrated Nigerian newsmen-the late Dele Giwa, the first editor-in-chief, Ray Ekpu, Dan Agbese and Yakubu Mohammed in 1984. The first edition of the magazine hit the Nigerian streets on January 28, 1985 . Since that first edition in 1885, Newswatch has become a household name in Nigeria , winning several professional awards nationally and internationally. Its success heralded a major revolution in the publishing world in Nigeria . There are now numerous magazines all aping Newswatch but unable to match its integrity, impartiality and fearlessness in the coverage of events. Many of Newswatch editors have become familiar with harassment from official circles since publication started in 1985. The magazine’s first editor-in-chief Dele Giwa was assassinated on October 19, 1986 by a parcel bomb, while the magazine was shut down for six months in 1987 because of its scrutinizing and critical coverage of government affairs. Since then, other editors have been in and out of detention because of the magazine’s stance on issues which are important to Nigeria ’s development and well being.
