Investment opportunities in Benue State
Benue, named after River Benue, is inhabited by 2.8 million people, according to the 1991 census. Benue State should appropriately be described as the food basket of the nation as it produces virtually all the major food crops in Nigeria all the year round. Benue State is composed of people from diverse ethnic and linguistic background. The states capacity to produce all the major food crops of Nigeria throughout the year is facilitated by the presence of about 23 rivers in the state.
Investment potentials
Agriculture:
Benue State is endowed with numerous agricultural and mineral resources capable of attracting investors. It has a suitable environment for agro-based venture in view of the numerous rivers, which crisscross the state, leaving the soil wet. The state agricultural produce includes potatoes, cassava, soya bean, guinea corn, beniseed.
Others are rice, plantain, banana, and millet. Fruits, which are mainly mangoes and oranges are produced in abundance. These crops hold great investment potentials for industrialists in the food processing sector of the economy.
The state has varieties of livestock, which include sheep, cattle, goat, poultry and pigs. Its numerous rivers also harbour large quantities of different fish. These will meet the nutritional requirements of the people and also sustain such industries as meat processing and other cold storage industries.
Commerce and Industry:
The agricultural and mineral endowments of Benue State offer opportunities for investment to both public and private sector industrialists. If explored to the full, the resources will shore up the industrial and economic base of Benue State.
The major industries that operate in Benue state include the Benue Cement Company (BCC) Plc, (now being privatised), which manufactures the Lion Brand Cement, Benro Packaging Company Plc, which manufactures paper bags and Benue Brewery, Makurdi. Others are Burnt Brick Factory, Otukpo; Agro-Millers, Makurdi; and Taraka Oil Mill, producers of Golden Soya Brand of Vegetable Oil, Beno-Lina Flour and Live-stock feeds.
The state-owned Lobi Bank and other financial institutions provide financial and banking services for people and companies.
In order to attract industrialists to the state, the state government has embarked on the development of industrial layouts.
