Investment opportunities in Jigawa State

Resources and Potentials

Jigawa is a state endowed with abundant mineral and natural resources. With a majority of its population engaged in agricultural, the state is rich in agricultural produce. Among the agricultural produce of the state are groundnuts, millet, cotton, guinea-corn, pepper, maize, cowpeas and a wide variety of vegetables and fruits. It is on record that the famous groundnut pyramids associated with former Kano State were largely cultivated in Jigawa State. Various irrigation facilities for increased agricultural production exist in the state. The Hadejia River Valley, which traverses the State, is largely in use for optimum food production all year round. The River valley is also instrumental to the realization of the laid down objectives of the National Accelerated Wheat Production Programme.

Livestock

The state has in abundance such livestock as sheep, goats, donkeys, horses, camels, and the horned cattle, a breed unique to West Africa.

Mineral Resources

Among the newly created states in Nigeria, Jigawa is probably one of the most richly endowed in terms of mineral resources. The following are the minerals available in the state:

Kaolin:

Large deposits of kaolin abound in Dust, Gawaram, Kazaure and Roni Local government areas. Kaolin is used in the manufacture of white cement, white wash, drugs like mist-kaolin. It can also be used in the manufacture of ceramic items of high quality as well as toothpaste.

Tourmaline

This is a highly valued type of gem stone and it occurs in parts of Gwaram Local Government Area.

Marl and Marlstone

These deposits occur in Hadejia, Birniwa, Birnin Kudu, Gumel and Garki Local government areas. It is widely used in the manufacture of cement and fertilizer for soils and deficient in acid.

Potash

This mineral is available in Birniwa and Kirikasamma local government areas. It is used in the manufacture of drugs and explosives.

Silica

Silica is used in the manufacture of sheet glass, abrasive paper, ceramics and burnt bricks. It exists at Ringim, Birniwa, Kazaure, and Babura local government areas.

Iron Ore

This is found in Roni Local Government Area. Iron ore is used in steel manufacturing.

Copper

This is found in the iron ore field identified at Roni Local Government.  It is largely used in making ornaments, kitchen utensils, electrical wires, and coins.

Pedoshper

This occurs in the Birnin Kudu Local Government Area. It is used in the manufacture of ceramics, artificial teeth, and even cement.

Gold

Traces of Gold have been identified in Dutse Local Government Area. Meanwhile, further investigation is presently going on to trace its origin.

White Quartz

Occurring in commercial quantity at Kazaure and Roni, white quartz is used in manufacturing glass and ceramic items. It also exists in crystal form at Gwaram Local Government Area.

Refactory Clay

This deposit is available at Hadejia and is mainly used as a refactory clay or mould.

Fine Clay

This deposit with expected high aluminum content is available at Gwaram Local Government Area.

Antimony

This in compound with other minerals is available at Birnin-Kudu.

Tourism Potentials

There exist in Jigawa State various tourist attractions. However, most of these centres are yet to be fully developed. Beside the capital city , Dutse, and few other towns, majority of what is Jigawa State still suffers from underdevelopment and lacks recreational and leisure facilities.

Among the tourist centres in the state are the historic Birnin-Kudu Rock Painting site, the Wawan Rafi Lake, the Maigatari Tourist Transit Camp, the age-old Dying Pits at Ringim and Hadejia. The Catering Rest Houses at Hadejia, Gumel, Kazaure, Birnin-Kudu as well as the newly built Ringim White Motel, which will soon be commissioned.

Moreover, the government is also constructing additional 25 chalets at the White Motel while the Ringim Local Government Council has awarded a contract worth N1 million for the construction of a cinema theatre in the area.

There exist in Jigawa State various festivals with Emir Durbars as the most prominent. This festival is the climax of the muslim feast of Id-El Fitr celebrated to end the Muslim Ramadan fasting.

During this festival, all the people normally assemble at the Emirs Palace in their best attires to pay homage to the Emir. Durbar celebration is very unique, featuring horses and camels well decorated along with riders. This festival helps the people to put behind them the agonies of the Ramadan fasting.

It also features traditional music and dances with the Emirs musicians performing at their best. The Emir of Hadejia is normally the chief celebrant and chief host of the Durbar Festival each year.
