The oil and gas industry is the engine that drives the Nigerian economy. It contributes more than 90 per cent of the foreign exchange earnings and accounts for nearly 50 per cent of the gross domestic product (GDP). However, the industry has been anything but problem free in recent years. It has been bedeviled by chronic shortages, incessant breakdown of refineries, cronyism, inefficiency, rampant corruption and haggling with the oil majors over cash call areas. Violence in the oil producing areas and sabotage of oil pipelines and flow stations have also hampered operations in recent years.

All these problems are now receiving adequate attention from the democratic government of President Olusegun Obasanjo. Efforts are also been made to put accountability back into the operations of Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), which runs the industry for the Nigerian government. With the appointment of former Secretary General of Opec Rilwan Lukman as President Obasanjo’s Petroleum and Energy Affairs special adviser, and Jackson Gaius-Obaseki as group managing director of NNPC, the oil industry is expected to regain its luster and retain its dominance in the Nigerian economy.

In the gas sector, the Nigerian Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) company, owned by the NNPC and some joint venture partners led by Shell, has begun shipping liquefied gas from the first train of its multi-train liquefied gas project in Bonny Island, in south east of Nigeria.
